About Us
The Annexe (La Cabaña) was erected in 2018 to house Jem's Mum when we bought the main property for our family home. After Jem's Mum passed away, when the time felt right we set about lovingly reinventing the space with a makeover and new identity - La Cabaña. Spain has a special place in our hearts as it’s where we were married, hence the spanish name.
We are a family of 5 with a daughter and 2 sons. Steve works from home most of the time, and Jem is usually around with our youngest son on maternity leave, so it’s likely that there will be someone on site should you need anything at all.
The Property
La Cabaña is a totally self-contained space and we have done our best to ensure your comfort and privacy. We ask that you keep the gate padlocked overnight and when the property is left vacant for security. There is a motion-activated security light on the drive, a doorbell on the roadside wall, and a key safe to the left of the gate. Should you want to leave the key in there while you are out, please make sure it has clicked shut and remember to scramble the combination.
NB - the cost of replacing locks if keys get lost will be deducted from the damage deposit.
Visitors
Visitors are welcome, there is space for 2 cars on the drive. The next closest parking is on Park Road, a few hundred yards up Cross Lane on the left. Please do not park on the lane as large farm vehicles often use it and will not be able to squeeze past a parked car.
Please also be respectful of our young family and our neighbours by keeping nighttime noise to a minimum especially when coming/going. All visitors not on the booking are to leave by 23:00 hours unless otherwise agreed.
Linen & Cleaning
Cleaning and bedding/towel changes will be done once a week at a day and time agreed with you on check in. On these days please ensure La Cabaña is left in a tidy state to enable us to work quickly and with ease. We’ll also water the plants :)
In between weekly housekeeping there is a hoover in the front porch and cleaning products under the sink in the kitchen, and to the left of the loo in the bathroom.
A table-top ironing board and iron can be found in the airing cupboard, and laundry bags have been placed in the wardrobes.
Heating & Hot Water
The heating is gas in the living space is set to an ambient 21. You can adjust it by turning the dial on the wall next to the airing cupboard. The radiators in the bedrooms are electric and set on a timer. We politely request that these are left according to the schedule when possible in order to keep our energy usage and cost down, however if you feel chilly overnight and the extra blanket isn’t cutting it, do go ahead and turn them up a couple of degrees.
Hot water is available 24/7 with a boost 3 times a day and a big enough tank for 3 people to share comfortably. If you find it is not working, please give us a call. Be careful as the water in the sinks can get very hot.
Appliance User Guides
There is a fully fitted kitchen with integrated fridge freezer, oven, microwave and washer dryer. The kitchen has been kitted out with cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery etc., and some food essentials in the cupboards which you are welcome to eat. As a welcome gift we’ve also left some provisions in the fridge. If you need anything else, please do give us a call.
Below are links to the user guides:
Waste
Thank you for helping us to safeguard the future for our children by sorting your waste. A link to what can be recycled can be found here.
Recycling, general waste and food bins can be found in the kitchen cupboard next to the washing machine, and the main bins are outside on the drive. The collection alternates between recycling and general waste on a Thursday morning.
Food waste is collected every week. Recycling must not be put outside in bags; please empty the contents into the blue bin and put the bag in the black one. Compostable food bin bags can be popped straight into the large kerbside caddy.
Entertainment
TV - FreeSat on HDMI1, Amazon Fire Stick on HDMI2.
Games - there is a selection of vintage board games in the bottom of the tall bookcase next to the couch.
Books - you are welcome to read any of the books in La Cabaña.
Please remember to return books and games used before you leave.
Food & Drink
The Curious Pig and Old House Inn are just over 5K walking distance via the quiet Dowlands Lane, and do decent pub grub. The Cherry Tree in Copthorne is closer, but via a busy and fast road. The food and service are both great though, highly recommended the Sunday roasts :)
Deliveroo and JustEat both cover our area. Lee Garden does the best Chinese takeaway, although it takes a long time to deliver so we advise collecting it from Horley.
ā
Please be sure to describe your location (first left on Cross Lane from Redehall Road end), otherwise they will knock on the main house door. If this happens we will send them around to you, but it might cost you a side dish or two :)
Local Area Amenities
Smallfield village is about a mile up Redehall Road and has a small parade of shops including a butchers, greengrocers, pharmacy, post office and small co-op. There is also a cafe serving food all day.
The local GP Surgery is on Wheelers Lane, walking distance from the shops. The nearest minor injuries unit is in East Grinstead, a shot car ride away. The nearest hospital is either Crawley or East Surrey.
The Gym Lounge is a short walk from the shops on Plough Road, offering classes as well as a space to work out.
ā
Horley and East Grinstead are our closest towns and both have a good selection of restaurants and pubs. There is a leisure park in Crawley with a cinema, bowling and crazy golf.
ā
Buses
Several bus routes service the village to Gatwick, Copthorne, Redhill. See here for details. The closest rail links are Gatwick and Horley.
ā
Taxis
Being a small village we don't have our own taxis, but our area is covered by all of the surrounding towns, here are some options:
